In 1802, when Peter Diel acquired the Baron of Dalberg’s, including the Burg Layen castle, it was unforeseeable that this would be the start of a two hundred year success story based on wine. Under the aegis of Armin Diel and his wife Monika, the estate’s 62 acres of vines have been continuously planted with Riesling and Pinot grapes. In the meantime, the next generation is deeply involved: Since 2006, daughter Caroline, graduated oenologist of Geisenheim University, has assisted with the long term cellar master Christoph Friedrich, has been responsible for work in the vineyards and cellars, in 2012, Armin Diel chose her for being his successor. In sales she is assisted by her husband Sylvain and her brother Victor, who is responsible for important export markets. The entire production process at Schlossgut Diel is based on a holistic approach, from vineyard management, grape harvest and wine making to Marketing.
A Life for Wine
Caroline Diel was born on March 5, 1980, in Münster, Westphalia. During her childhood she moved with her family to the estate in Burg Layen. She attended elementary school in Rümmelsheim, then the Hildegardisschule in Bingen. For her junior and senior year of high school she attended Robert-Louis Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, California, where she graduated in 1999. Caroline started in the hotel management business, completing internships at the Hotel Bareiss and at Johann Lafer, but then decided to pursue a career in viticulture. This was followed by internships in Château Pichon-Lalande in Bordeaux and renowned German vineyards such as Robert Weil, Toni Jost and Dr. Deinhard. During her wine-growing studies in Geisenheim, she interned in France in the champagne house Ruinart, in Reims and in the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, in Burgundy.
